One of the greatest joys of being an educator is the beautiful sense of renewal that arrives every August. A new school year brings a fresh start, clean slates, and limitless possibilities for our learners. I also love new school supplies. :-) Last year a group of dedicated community members, school staff, and students worked together to develop a five year strategic plan for Belmond-Klemme CSD. You will notice our new mission is proudly highlighted at the top of this newsletter.

Our students' safety and well-being are always at the heart of everything we do. As part of our commitment to providing a safe, caring environment from the moment our learners leave your doorstep to the moment they return, we are enhancing our school bus safety protocols.
To give you some context, Iowa law requires school districts to provide transportation for elementary students living more than 2 miles from their school, and secondary students living more than 3 miles away. While we proudly go above and beyond these minimums to support our families, managing our busy in-town routes requires extra care. We want to ensure that every Bronco enjoys a safe, positive, and secure ride to and from school.
To achieve this, we will be enforcing the following guidelines:
- Mandatory seat belts.
- Assigned seating.

As we prepare for an exciting new school year, we are thrilled to welcome our rising seventh graders to the Belmond-Klemme Jr/Sr High family! Please join us for our 7th Grade Orientation on Thursday, August 20, at 6:00 PM, beginning in the school auditorium. This evening is a wonderful opportunity for our new students and families to partner with us, learn about the upcoming year, and tour the building together to get comfortable with their new surroundings. We are incredibly eager to support our newest Broncos as they step into this next chapter of growth, and we look forward to collaborating with you to ensure a safe, caring, and successful transition to junior high! |

We are constantly working to keep our school zones safe and running smoothly. To help ease congestion during busy drop-off and pick-up times, the city has established new No Parking zones during school hours in the following areas:

Our students' health, well-being, and academic success are always at the forefront of everything we do. As part of our ongoing commitment to fostering a safe, caring, and healthy learning environment, we are updating our school policy regarding outside food to better align with state and federal nutritional guidelines. Effective immediately, students will no longer be permitted to bring in large-scale outside treats (such as fast food or pizza) to replace a standard, balanced lunch for their peers. While we love celebrating special milestones, ensuring that every learner receives the proper sustenance to fuel their minds and bodies during the school day is vital to their growth and focus.
We deeply value the strong partnership we share with our families, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we implement this adjustment. By prioritizing nutritious choices during the lunch hour, we are working collectively to set our Broncos up for long-term success both inside and outside the classroom. To ensure the health and physical safety of our students, staff, and families, we kindly remind our community that dogs and other pets are not permitted on school campus grounds at any time of the day or night, including during after-school activities, athletic events, and weekends. While we love our furry friends, keeping our school fields, playgrounds, and walkways free from pets helps us maintain a secure, predictable, and hygienic space for our children to play and learn. We deeply appreciate your understanding, cooperation, and partnership in keeping our campus safe for our young Broncos! |
To support our school-home partnership, we are teaming up with the City of Belmond to share a quick, important update regarding Ordinance No. 481. The city has updated the rules for bicycles, electric scooters, and e-bikes. Since so many of our Broncos ride to school, let's review the quick "need-to-knows" to keep everyone safe. After all, together we make a difference!
The Quick Checklist for Safe Riding

Obey Traffic Laws: Riders must follow the same rules as cars, including using standard hand signals for turning and stopping.

No Double Riding: Only one rider per seat is allowed. Never carry more people than the device is designed to hold.

Ride on the Right: Always stay close to the right-hand curb and never ride more than two abreast (side-by-side).

Keep Hands Free: You must keep at least one hand on the handlebars at all times. No carrying bulky items that block your steering.

Yield to Walkers: Pedestrians always have the right-of-way. Give a polite verbal warning before passing anyone on a sidewalk or trail.

Downtown Sidewalks are Off-Limits: Riding bikes or scooters on sidewalks within the downtown Business District is strictly prohibited.

Age Limits for Fast E-Bikes: You must be 16 or older to operate a fast Class 3 electric bicycle (speeds up to 28 mph).

Light Up at Night: Riding after dark requires a white front headlight and a red rear light or reflector visible from 300 feet away.

Protect Your Brain: Helmets are not required by law, but BK Schools and the city strongly encourage them for every rider!
What Happens if Rules are Broken?
The city prefers education over fines.
- For headlight violations, riders get 72 hours to fix the light and have the ticket dropped.
- For other violations, the city can impound the bike or scooter temporarily (5 days for a first offense) instead of issuing a standard fine.
- For riders under 18, the city will contact parents for consent to impound the device. If consent is denied, future violations will be treated as municipal infractions, and parents can be held liable for subsequent offenses.
