This week we will be focusing on Bullying in our building. Students, teachers, paras and Ms. Jensen will all be focusing on ensuring that we all know and follow our bullying and harassment policy at Belmond-Klemme. According to our Student Handbook, the policy on bullying is as follows:
Anti-Bullying/Harassment Policy
Definition-Bullying and Harassment of students, staff, and volunteers are against federal, state, and local policy, and are not tolerated by the board. The board is committed to providing all students with a safe and civil school environment in which all members of the school community are treated with dignity and respect. To that end, the board has in place policies, procedures, and practices that are designed to reduce and eliminate bullying and harassment as well as processes and procedures to deal with incidents of bullying and harassment. Bullying and harassment of students by other students, by school employees, and by volunteers who have direct contact with students will not be tolerated in the school or school district.
Protection Times and Locations
This policy is in effect while students, staff, and volunteers are on property within the jurisdiction of the board; while on school-owned or school-operated vehicles; while attending or engaged in school-sponsored activities; and while away from school grounds if the misconduct directly affects the good order, efficient management and welfare of the school or school district.
Possible Disciplinary Action
If after an investigation, a student is found to be in violation of this policy, the student shall be disciplined by appropriate measures which may include suspension or expulsion. If after an investigation a school employee is found to be in violation of this policy, the employee shall be disciplined by appropriate measures which may include termination. If after an investigation a school volunteer is found to be in violation of this policy, the volunteer shall be subject to appropriate measures which may include expulsion from school grounds. “Volunteer” means an individual who has regular, significant contact with students.

Students, to continue our discussion on bullying, please consider that…
In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Department of Education released the first federal definition of bullying. The definition includes three core elements: unwanted aggressive behavior, observed or perceived power imbalance, repetition or high likelihood of repetition of bullying behaviors. This definition helps determine whether an incident is bullying or another type of aggressive behavior or both. Bullying affects all youth, including those who are bullied, those who bully others, and those who witness bullying. The effects of bullying may continue into adulthood.
Wednesday January 26
Lunch: Sweet & Sour Chicken, brown rice, broccoli, mandarin oranges, fruit/veggie bar
As we have discussed previously, please consider that there is not a single profile of a young person involved in bullying. Youth who bully can be either well connected socially or marginalized, and may be bullied by others as well. Similarly, those who are bullied sometimes bully others.
Thursday January 27
Lunch: Taco Soup, frosted cinnamon roll, carrots, banana, fruit/veggie bar

Students, as we think about bullying, please consider that….Solutions to bullying are not simple. Bullying prevention approaches that show the most promise confront the problem from many angles. They involve the entire school community—students, families, administrators, teachers, and staff such as bus drivers, nurses, cafeteria and front office staff—in creating a culture of respect. Zero tolerance and expulsion are not effective approaches. Bystanders, or those who see bullying, can make a huge difference when they intervene on behalf of someone being bullied. Studies also have shown that adults can help prevent bullying by talking to children about bullying, encouraging them to do what they love, modeling kindness and respect, and seeking help.
