NOTICE: Positive Student Cases of COVID-19 in Belmond-Klemme Schools

date 10/29/2020 author Trish Morris category Covid-19

Wednesday, October 28, 2020

Dear Belmond-Klemme Parents and Community Members:

The Belmond-Klemme Community School District has experienced a sudden and severe outbreak of COVID-19 among our student population. As of today, Belmond-Klemme has identified a total of five (5) students this week as testing positive for COVID-19.  This letter is intended to update you with some important information, and to reassure you that the Belmond-Klemme Community School District continues to take every step possible to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff.

The students who tested positive attend the secondary (7-12) school. The district is working with the Iowa Department of Public Health and Wright County Public Health. The five infected students are all currently at home recovering.

Upon learning of the positive cases, our school immediately implemented diligent contact tracing to find others who may have been exposed. We identified 62 students. In nearly all instances, the exposures are attributed to activities outside of school and not anything that is happening during the school day. Our careful and compartmentalized instructional delivery system in our secondary school continues to work to protect our students while in school. The 62 students who were exposed are currently at home, under observation, and continuing their studies online. I want to remind our students: if you have symptoms of COVID-19, you should contact your physician immediately.

As of today, this outbreak has not affected the students and staff and Jacobson Elementary to any great extent. Elementary school, preschool and kindergarten through grade 6, will continue to operate according to our regular schedule. However, our 7-12 teachers are moving classes to a 100% virtual learning environment for the next week. In-person classes and instruction will resume in our high school building at 8:30 A.M. on Monday, November 9, 2020.

During this brief pause in regular instruction, we are following all CDC guidelines for cleaning and disinfecting, and we are doing a deep clean of our high school building. We encourage all of you to continue following the CDC’s recommendations to remain healthy and well.

You will continue to be notified like this if or when we have further diagnosed cases of COVID-19 within our school buildings. Our greatest priority is the safety of our students, staff, and families. Please continue to take necessary precautions to protect yourself and those around you.

We are grateful for the opportunity to serve you and your family, especially as we face this challenging situation together. Thank you for your support of Belmond-Klemme Schools.

Yours truly,

Dan Frazier, Ed.D. Superintendent
